Last year was real slow, but the fourth quarter was really bad in comparison to the year before," said Jon Self, president and founder of the establishment. "We\'re looking at a new business plan and we\'ll continue to operate."<br><br>The facility, which has two bar and dining areas, several side rooms for meetings or banquets and an area that sells OSU merchandise, has seen business drop "across the board," said Self, noting that business has slowed for dinners and banquets.<br><br>"We\'ve had huge parties booked by big companies you\'ve heard of that canceled two weeks out. For $15,000 for a party, that\'s a big loss for us," said Self.<br><br>The restaurant, which is adorned with Ohio State memorabilia, including Archie Griffin\'s Heisman trophies, photos, autographed footballs and old uniforms, will be more aggressive in offering dinner specials and attracting more banquet bookings, he said.<br><br>The restaurant also has an area dedicated to the OSU football team\'s national championships. Its largest ballroom can hold more than 200 attendees.<br><br>Paperwork was filed last Wednesday with the Franklin County Court of Common Pleas on behalf of the Buckeye Hall of Fame Cafe\'s landlord, Orr Realty LLC. Attorneys for Orr Realty could not be reached for comment yesterday.<br><br>"This is a way for us to try to move forward. It wasn\'t an easy decision, but you make the decision and you have to move forward," said Self.<br><br>He did not disclose how long the restaurant\'s lease is other than it\'s "long-term."<br><br>"It gives us an opportunity to reorganize the business. We\'re doing a good enough business, but not enough to support the facility," Self said.<br><br>He declined to speculate how much time the restaurant has to turn things around before further action could be taken, such as filing for bankruptcy or shutting its doors.<br><br>(See Cafe, Page 12)<br><br>The restaurant employs between 50 and 100 workers depending on how busy it is. Many of the workers are part-time employees who work on an on-need basis.<br><br>Self said the problems faced by his restaurant are similar to what\'s occurring across the industry.<br><br>"Everybody\'s cutting back and it affects everything," he said. "But (we) can\'t cut back until it\'s gone."<br><br>Following the opening of the Olentangy River Road location Self took the concept to other college towns, including the Spartan Hall of Fame Cafe in East Lansing, Mich., the Cardinal Hall of Fame Cafe in Louisville, Ken. and the Marshall Hall of Fame Cafe in Huntington, W. Va.<br><br>While those other locations have suffered from the poor economy, they are doing better than Buckeye Hall of Fame Cafe, Self said.<br><br>"They\'re doing medium to good, but they\'re 10,000 square feet and (the Buckeye Hall of Fame) is 50,000 square feet," he said. "Some are down 2 or 3 percent, not double digits."<br><br>The Buckeye Hall of Fame Cafe opened in 1997 in the location of the former Jai Lai Cafe, a popular eatery for more than four decades.<br><br>The restaurant is especially popular during football season when interest in the Buckeyes heightens and because the facility is only a short drive from Ohio Stadium.<br><br>"It\'s feast of famine. On game days we do really well and then during the week it\'s slower," said Self.<br><br>He said this time of the year is also a good time for the restaurant because of the many high school sports tournaments taking place in the city, so many out-of-towners visit the Hall of Fame.<br><br>Hoping, like most other retailers, that the economy improves sooner rather than later, Self said he vows to make the restaurant succeed.<br><br>"The easy thing would be to cut and run, but how many more people would then be out of work?" he said.
