2005—present: The Herd’s design remains unchanged. However, some players are now using Riddell’s Revolution helmet — the first significant structural change in 25 years. It was designed to minimize concussive injuries. Studies revealed that 70% of concussions are caused from blows to the side of the head, face or jaw area. The distance from the helmet shell to the player’s head is increased — allowing greater room to manage impact. The faceguard is designed to reduce jarring from low-level impacts and the shell extends to the jaw area for better fit and stability. A new pad design provides better protection to the side of the head and the jaw. In 2005, the Herd made the move to Conference-USA allowing for more national exposure and tougher I-A competition.
