Color vs. black and white

I took this picture of the Ironton-Russell Bridge the other day and it didn’t turn out so well – a blue bridge against a bright blue sky.

It's okay, but it could be better.

Then I remembered how Lori Wolfe, chief photographer of The Herald-Dispatch, likes black and white over color. I changed it and cropped it some, and it works a lot better. At least to me it does. Or am I wrong?
