Heart of Glass
Blenko Glass is a West Virginia treasure that spans generations. Nothing symbolizes the state of West Virginia better or more beautifully than Blenko Glass. We will discuss current and former craftsmen and designers and how important it is that Blenko and West Virginia glass be appreciated and valued by the younger generation.

Serenity Glass in Texas To Close - Brick & Mortar Shop

Below is a note is from Larry of Texas . Larry has given hundreds of photos to the blog in the last couple of years. He tirelessly answers your emails for glass identification and has been another 'cheerleader' for Blenko Glass. Sometime next month Larry will be doing a post to update us about how to access his glass website, and what he might have for sale. These are very difficult economic times for all business, even more so for vintage glass. If you plan to buy vintage Blenko or American Glass, email Larry with your list, he may just have what you want in stock. If you have been following the blog, you know Larry cares about American Glass, does his research and his knowledge of American Glass is extensive. When I say BUY LOCAL. I'm including Larry and Serenity Glass in the term LOCAL. For NEW Collectors - Buying quality is very important. With Serenity Glass a buyer has the secure feeling that the seller knows what he has to offer. hjh (Larry Note)

To All;
For questions concerning B.C.S. send emails to Tim or Karin at tkalonzo@swbell.net I know they have a busy schedule, but an=m certain they are interested in continuing B.C.S. ask what you can do to help support and grow this group.
Together we can do it. B.C.S. will become more important as time goes on as the history of BLENKO fades( weather they close permanently or not) Collectors hold the future of BLENKO Glass. I will take this time to announce to all of you I am closing my bricks and mortar operation the end of Feb. I will strive to have a better online presence, do shows, and mail/phone orders. I will continue to post and support this blog.

West Virginia Glass - Fostoria

My grandparents lived in Wheeling, W.Va., so I grew up using Fostoria and visiting the Fostoria outlets with my Mom and my Grandma.

In our home we have a small collection of Fostoria and a small collection of other West Virginia Glass, and a lot of BLENKO GLASS - we seem to love the colors of BLENKO.

To me, Fostoria is eloquent glass, the colors, the designs, I always feel special when I bring out the "Fostoria" for a dinner party or for a brunch.

This Fostoria Regal Blue is very nice, Larry didn't sent information about the quanity or the price so email him if you want to add these pieces to your collection or start a collection of fine West Virginia Glass. hjh

Blenko Visitors Center - OPEN and Shelves Have been restocked.

Notice: Today my Mother was at Blenko Glass, she reports Mindy and Connie as saying are receiving a NEW STOCKING today evening. This will include more Designer Samples, many pieces of very old glass - many samples that never made the line. Many one of a time or small quantity items. If you haven't been to Blenko Glass for the ' We Might Be Closing Sale" GO NOW!!!!
Mindy told my Mom the word is they have enough glass for 7-10 days. Unless sales are brisk.
Note: This DOES NOT mean Blenko will close, we have no inside information, only that the current supply (furnaces are closed) will be running out.
They are now selling items that have been in storage or just 'forgotten' about.
If you happen to purchase anything new or different, send an email.
If you purchased the GOLD BOWL that was a designer sample, please send photo. My Mom couldn't stop talking about the bowl.
She bowl a designer sample - wedding bowl - for her Nephew Shan, who was married on 2/20/09 I'll post a photo when it arrives.

Where to Buy Quality Blenko Glass?

The questions I've been ask most often this month are:
1. " Where can I purchase quality Blenko Glass?" Can you recommend sellers? Online or brick and mortar stores? I'm asking for your help- readers please recommend stores and websites or ebay sellers by name.
Readers please send your favorite store, address phone numbers and website if available to: Theblenkoproject@aol.com we'll compile a list of sellers for readers.
Your comments about items found, and if the seller have knowledge, is consignment, what period you most all find etc are all welcome. Also if the list price is negotiable.
#2. Is Blenko closing? How long will be Gift Shop VC be open?
I do not have inside information about BLENKO, I write or call just as you would. Please phone Blenko at 304 743 9081. IF we get any information from the factory we will immediately pass this along to you.
#3. Where will I be able to buy BLENKO after the closing? See #1 and wait for the post sometime next month.
#4 Why can't you post photos of what they have at the visitors center?
They have not sent photos, I am over 3 hours away from the factory. A reader did send yesterday photos of every table in Blenko. I will publish these before friday. However, I was told it changes daily . An article in the Charleston Gazette quotes Katie (VP at Blenko) as saying they had another weeks worth of glass in the holding bend.
#5 . Investors? Is this open to Collectors to the public? Why won't the government do anything?
I have NO repeat NO knowledge of Blenko seeking investors, I did write to the factory on Monday for clarification - when this arrives, I'll post the information.
Re: Government doing something? What would you propose they do?

Blenko is a privately owned, family owned business.
May I suggest you phone Blenko at 304 743 9081 and speak with Katie Tripp about this, she was the person quoted and photographed in the newspaper article.
#6. Have you read the things said about you in the 'other blog'.
The only blog I read besides this one is a Herald Blog - Hot Topics, and This is Not My Blog a Charleston, WV Blog.
While I appreciate your offers to defend me, it isn't necessary. Also not necessary to copy and send me the comments. My life is too full of happiness and good fortune to allow for negativity.
#7. Why are my comments not showing? Why haven't you published my photos?
If you send photos and I don't respond with a note of thanks. It means the photos went to spam. Place the word BLENKO in the title of all email.
Re: comments, while I am not always the person to approve the comments, I attempt to allow only positive, on topic comments. As collectors we want Blenko to be successful offering suggestions for improvement is okay. Suggestions and comments that are 'mean and nasty' are not. If you think the comments are sometimes 'mean' you should see the ones we don't publish.
#8. Did you pass your exam and when do you finish school?
WOW its been four years of Dental School, and you have all been very patient. No punt intended. School is over for me the middle of May, then I go on to Ohio for some advanced training. Yes. I did pass my national board exam. When I finish rural rotation and have more time, I'll update you about boards and my life.

Tea for Two ? Tammy Kosla style

Tammy Kosla was the President and Founder of the Blenko Collectors Society. Her glass collection can be seem on the Blenko Collector Four website and also on http://www.blenkoproject.org/ (Chicago Collector).

Hillary
I am not a purist when it comes to my Blenko collecting. I am into collecting to enjoy and to have fun. I don't buy glass for resale purposes unlike some others that occasionally post here. When I no longer have fun collecting that is when I will be done. If someone wants to call a 573 a teapot then they should be allowed to do so. I had a friend call me tonight and said it looks more like a coffee pot. I just hope no one out there would think about putting boiling water in any piece of Blenko. Also unlike a couple others I do not wish to see the Blenko company permanently closed. I believe everyone should collect what they want to collect. If it is a 573 "teapot" or a 9316 "face vase" or something made at the company in 2009 then they should buy it if that is what they want. I have always had a problem with being told what I should buy. I personally like Don Shepherd designs but in some eyes the glass made after 1974 is not something that people should invest their money in. Sorry I believe in collecting what you like not what someone tells you to buy.The first picture proves that some people need to let up and start enjoying Blenko and life ! As you can see in the picture I am NOT a purist otherwise I would not have used crystal punch cups with a chartreuse handle to serve the tea along side a Teal 573 "teapot, coffee pot, cocktail pitcher"The 2nd picture is for those that think the 573 can be just a coffee pot.Life is short, Enjoy it!

Wayne Husted - 1951 Teapot and 2 Blenko 1956 cocktail pitchers

We've been discussing Teapots & Blenko. Wayne Husted is my may considered to be THE Blenko designer - he was with Blenko 1953-63. These photos and note are from Husted. *Note correction to 53 made on 2/23/09

Hillary...Attached is a Jpeg picture of the ceramic tea pot that I threw on potterswheel in San Antonio Texas, in 1951. I had use of the ceramic studio ofHarding Black, a favorite local ceramist.I spent the summer in San Antonio throwing pots between my undergraduateand graduate years at Alfred University. The Witte Museum was near Harding Black's ceramic studio and the museumlet me live in their studio that was huge and where Gutzen Borgland (sp.must wikipedia). sculpted his models for Mt. Rushmore.I actually dug the clay for this tea pot in the hot sun an hoursouth of San Antonio, The clay is damn near porcelain in qualityas it fires very high at cone 13. I added the white glaze withspecks of mineral called ilmanite (sp?) which is iron that meltsinto the glaze as you can see. I liked the fact that it made itlook like a birds egg. This is one of only a few pieces I have of the over a hundredpieces I made in ceramicsduring the summer of 1951. I sold some of the piecesto Jostens, a San Antonio department store... butI sold most all of the ceramicsI made that year to a very high end craft store onMadison Avenue in NYC. Swedish name can't rememberbut will. Once I was looking into the stores window and found myself next tothe famous character actor Vincent Price who made a nicecomment about my piece in the window. The other Jpegs are of two Blenko "pitchers" I designed atBlenko in 1956 (for 1957 lines). There are other spouted pieces I designed and one is onlyabout six inches high so could be more scale of tea potbut none were really designed for specific use. Or as someonesaid at last week's cocktail party in Sausalito. "Wayne is thedesigner that created a lot of stuff that doesn't function.True as I figured most Blenko was just to look at. TheseBlenko items I feel sure were seldom used to pour from.Wayne.
Note: Wayne's designs for Blenko Glass are very popular. In the Blenko Project survey he was most often listed as the designer "I collect". Most everyone has 3 or 4 Husted items are their dream dream list.

Blenko Teapot * cont.

Hillary,

as we listened to the discussion about the possibility of a Blenko teapot, I couldn't refrain from sending this pic. Obviously not a working teapot, I found this ornamental in the gift shop about a month ago. This is a "lunch-time" piece that made its way to the visitor's center. It is actually a failed attempt at making a snowman or a bunny. Buy the glass that makes you smile!

Tim K.
Kissin' Kate's Antiques
This is delightful! I also agree buy the best quality you can afford, one great piece rather than a dozen just OK items. Being surrounded by quality makes everyday special. Thank you for sharing!

Blenko Tea Pot.

The answer is NO not really a 'teapot' but many beautiful objects of art for pouring . . .

Your question was: " Did BLENKO GLASS make a Teapot? "

I didn't know, so sent the question to three people from the group of knowledgable glass collectors I most often call upon. I haven't heard from Tammy Kosla who has the Blenko Catalogues memorized and maybe a walking Blenko encylopedia - so the jury is out - but the answers I've received are below

Tim and Karin Alonzo of Texas not only sent an answer they were kind enough to send photos.

Now ladies our search for these will begin

Blenko made several designs that resembles a teapot

. Here are a few:571 is called an "Iced Tea Pitcher with iced guard"

573 is a "Cocktail Pitcher", but most resembles a teapot

.574 Martini pitcher944 pitcher was designed by Winslow Anderson it is called a "vase with handle

"5729 Rooster Decanter is one of the rarest pieces. I know of only one in a private collection. 6145 Rooster Pitcher.

Blogger is acting up so photo placement maybe off -. hjh

Wayne Husted had this to say:

Hillary...I suspect that this idea came from the several spouted designs I createdwith tea pot like spouts but you said “covers” and actually I think one ofthese little spouted pitchers had a cover, as sample but not put into line. I will have to show you picture of tea pot from my graduate work at Alfred .. which I still have. Also the one without cover can be found on Damon Cranes website. In fact I just advised a collector that it was one of best buyson the site. Wayne.
Note: On Sunday we'll have photos of Wayne Husted's Tea pot from his graduate work at Alfred! Return for this...
We didn't hear from Tammy Kosla yet - TK has memorized all the Blenko catalogues, she KNOWS blenko, I'm anxious to hear her comments re: teapot.

Life after Blenko?

The question was. Is there Life after Blenko?
Dear Reader:
History is said to be the best predictor of the future. The Blenko Designers - all became more well known after leaving Blenko.
Winslow Anderson, Joel P. Myers, Wayne Husted, Matt Carter, Hank Adams all made a good life and fame and fortune has been very kind to them.
Many of the craftsmen at Blenko will be able retire, others have multiple skills that are transferable to other job settings.
Blenko Glass www.blenkoglass.com remains open, furnaces are down, they are selling the previously made stock while determining the next move.
BLENKO GLASS - Milton, W.Va. off I-64. Take a day trip to Milton, visit the 2nd floor of the gift shop (Blenko Museum) then walk around the lake, view the garden of glass. If you haven't phoned your local representatives about BLENKO GLASS
do so this week. hjh

Matt Carter 1995 to 2002 Blenko Designer

We are using photos from Blenko Museum Website with permission of Damon Crain. The Blenko Museum's mission is to promote anylysis and understanding of the work of the Blenko Glass Company, focusing on the Historic Period of 1947-1974. They are a private independent organization, not affiliated with the Blenko Glass Company.
There are now many sites devoted to BLENKO GLASS - Blenko Collectors - and American Glass. Google Blenko Glass and spend the day looking at photos and learning about Blenko!

http://www.blenkomuseum.org/ These photos by Damon Crain speak volumes about Matt Carter's time at Blenko Glass. The 'Ruby Millinenieum' and the tangerine web and 2 of the 2034 opaline yellow - are Matt Carter designs that I own. Matt Carter's work (over 100 designs ) will be add to the Blenkoproject http://www.blenkoproject.org/ website this summer. Matt Carter was kind enough to send a CD of his work at Blenko.

I again apologize for spacing - Blogger has been a problem this week.

Blenko - Great Design in the 70s

There are those 'people' who say Blenko Glass www.blenkoglass.com hasn't had great design since the early 60s.
The Blenko Museum www.blenkomuseum.org has a sampling of all the 'great Blenko designs' today I have lifted a few of John Nickerson's designs.
You'll want to check out the Blenko Museum, the photos are beautiful, professional photos by Damon Crain. The documentation is accurate. Great source for research and information gathering. Or if you are like me .....its a WishBook site!
Note: To learn more about these photos, the description of the glass etc go to www.blenkomuseum.org .
Any one have these items in their collection?

Blenko Glass - An Education On the Website. www.blenkoglass.com

Photo and information about the steps in glass making process from the BLENKO GLASS Website.
http://www.blenkoglass.com/ Terry the Blenko Glass web goddess loves Blenko Glass as much as I do! She is bright and creative enough to have a family of her own and a BLENKO obsession!

Thanks to Terry the website http://www.blenkoglass.com/ is an educational tool. One can watch (video) of glass being made, view tools etc. Check out the website.

"
Blenko Glass is made using the same methods and tools that the Master Craftsmen in Europe used hundreds of years ago. All workers at Blenko are trained on the job and perpetuate a 1000 year old tradition. The workers in glass factories are divided into groups of six, called "shops." The shop members each have a specific duty to perform, and each task varies in its degree of skill. The "Finisher" and "Blower" are the two key members of the team. The "Gatherer" is next in line, and the "Bit Gatherer", "Stick up boy" and the "Carry-in boy" follow in that order. It is essential to the successful completion of a piece of glass that each member of this team perform his task skillfully and faithfully. Just as in any team, full cooperation is necessary. "Check out the Blenko Glass website, then tool around to the Blenko Collectors website, The Blenko Project website, The Blenko Museum website, and Collecting Blenko website and many more....Blenko addicts continue to grow in number.

BLENKO GLASS Gift Shop - OPEN TODAY

BLENKO GLASS VISITOR CENTER / GIFT SHOP IS OPEN THIS WEEK, The Museum upstairs is also open! The gift shop has an excellent supply of Blenko and WV made glass tableware. Reader Bridgett reported that on Sunday she saw several lamps still available at the gift shop. She also noted the clearance tables in the back of the VC had glass and were frequently refilled (these tables contain items that have been marked down more than once - they are usually 25 - 30 % BELOW wholesale. All items in the gift shop are less than retail price. hjh Questions? Phone 304 743 9081

Tea for Two or more? Question - Did Blenko Make a Teapot or teapot(s)

The question is: Hillary what's your favorite Blenko teapot? I haven't been able to find a Blenko teapot? How much should I pay?

What's your favorite teapot?

We'll ask the 'collectors' if Blenko made a teapot. I don't own a Blenko teapot. For me teapots are objects of art - I adore tea pots. My favorite teapot is usually the most recent one my Mom brings into our home. Personally, I own three teapots, one is a vintage black Wedgwood pot purchased by my Grandma Jessie in England as a remembrance of her visit for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth, the other two new (less than 5 years old) designed by Vera Wang.

Photos above - Do you have a preference in this group? The Vera Wang Wedgewood are still in stock.

If we learn Blenko made a teapot, I'll search for a photos for you. If you have information about Blenko and teapots or photos please share. hjh

Your Glass Questions - Where to Donate My Glass?

This is a question we get frequently.
First I would find a local glass appraiser and ask him to spend an afternoon looking at my things. Have as much info available with each set as possible and have them available and freely accessible. Ask for a written, sign appraisal.
Then ask your children and relatives what they want, do you have friends who love particular items? If so I would consider gifting to these individuals.
After this if you have West Virginia Glass please consider the West Virginia Division of Culture and History in Charleston (they maybe limited in what they can accept), the West Virginia Museum of Glass in Weston, Huntington Museum of Glass, your local University may have interest in your glass collection, check on line to see if there is a museum for your glass company.
email theblenkoproject@aol.com about specific and I'll try to help or hook you up with people who can.

Frog or Prince? V-Day Approaches

Regardless . . . . if you are a Frog ready for the role of PRINCE or a lady in waiting, or a baby frog not quiet ready for 'role of prince' . . . . Valentine's Day in less than 36 hours away and you need to contact the FTD Florist FTD Florist in WV nearest you for the appropriate 'Splash of Flowers', if flowers aren't your things (they are the easiest less involved Vday gift). Then try cards, the V shaped Pizza, Candy, orDinner and Dancing, Sky is the Limit. ..But don't forget V-Day and remember to send a card to your family or origin on this day of love. IF you live in West Virginia consider a drive to BLENKO GLASS http://www.blenkoglass.com/ phone 304 743 9081 to check on the selection or to place a phone order. hjh

Cambridge Glass - Not a WV Company - But Close By

My Grammy Fran and her friend Gracie loved Cambridge Glass, Gracie would go from yard sale to yard sale seeking Cambridge Glass. The folks in Wheeling consider Cambridge local glass. If you have an interest in Cambridge Glass visiting the Museum or / and joining the Collectors Club is the correct beginning.
The National Museum of Cambridge Glass
On April 3, 2002, the National Cambridge Collectors, Inc. proudly opened a premier glass museum in downtown Cambridge, Ohio. It houses a superb collection of Cambridge glassware produced by The Cambridge Glass Company from 1902 to 1958. The museum is located at 136 South Ninth Street, one block south of the main street of Cambridge, and is open April through October. The year 2002 marked the 100th anniversary of the making of the first piece of Cambridge Glass. The Museum Grand Opening celebration took during NCC Convention week on June 27, 2002.
Thanks to Steve for the following info - Check out their website.
In the early 1900s, Guernsey County, and particularly Cambridge, became known worldwide for its production of quality glass, mainly from The Cambridge Glass Company. Today, Cambridge glass is a much sought-after collectible. The company produced thousands of designs and color combinations, considered one of the finest quality glassware lines in the world.
The National Museum of Cambridge Glass display area is made up of 1250 lineal feet of 16" shelving, where visitors are able to experience a wide variety of examples of this admired glass. It is an awesome beauty of well-lit, sparkling glass and warm oak display cases.
The History of Glassmaking is represented using mannequins in 1100 square feet of exhibits with a mock furnace, tools, molds, and other items involved in the manufacturing process of fine handmade glassware. Within this area, visitors can see an etching table, a decorating area, and an engraving/cutting area.
Included in the museum is a 100 square foot Dining Room display. Using period furniture as its backdrop, the room is appointed in examples of a finely set table in the early 1900s.
The Sample Room played a very important part in the sales of The Cambridge Glass Company. Another 100 square foot room has been created to represent a Sample Room. This room uses original sample room furniture and shelving. The door itself is the original Sample Room door from The Cambridge Glass Company facility.
In addition to original Cambridge glassware, an area has been created to display reproductions. With the advent of reproductions, it is important that collectors learn to distinguish between original and reproduction items. This display will help to make these distinctions crystal clear.
Museum Gift Shop
The museum has a gift shop where visitors may purchase small glass items and select from a library of books that are for sale. Also available for purchase and viewing is the video "The Crystal Lady," which was an original Cambridge advertisement for glassware. In the future, the museum will offer a research room full of an outstanding collection of reference materials.
The museum is located at 136 South Ninth Street. It is handicaped accessible with plenty of parking available. It is open April through October: Wednesday - Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m. Closed Easter and July 4. Phone 740 432-4245. Tour groups are accepted during additional hours by calling 740-432-4245 in advance.

Excellence Award
On April 18, 2008, over 260 community and business leaders from the region gathered in Walnut Creek, OH, where the National Museum of Cambridge Glass was presented with the Eastern Ohio Development Alliance "Excellence in Tourism Award." The plaque is now on display at the museum as a testament to the hard work and dedication of the membership of the National Cambridge Collectors, Inc.

Blenko Air Twist - Answer to Question ?

Here are catalog scans of airtwist glassware from the regular Blenko line and the Colonial Williamsburg line. Tim Alonzo - Texas Note: (1) Buying books & catalogues related to the items you plan to collect is a good investment. Joining the Blenko Collectors Society will allow you to meet other collectors of West Virginia and Blenko Glass, you'll learn where to find books, catalogues, glass. (2) Just realized I'm not certain all three of the glasses are pictured here? What are your thoughts?

V - Day is Nearing . . Buy Blenko for V Day!

Each year since entering WVU - for eight years now, I've said BUY BLENKO GLASS VASES for V Day! Refill the Vase during the year with fresh flowers from your own garden or from Krogers and enjoy having beautiful flowers all year long at a fraction of the cost!

Many local florist . Milton Florist in Milton, W.Va., in Charleston the Charleston Cut Florist, and I'm certain if you ask your own florist they could or would arrange to have your flowers delivered in a BLENKO GLASS container. The gift of flowers are ever so much more special when arranged in a Blenko Glass container.

My recommendation is to drive to Milton - the location of Blenko Glass gift shop where Blenko Glass is sold at 50 - 85 % off the list price daily. Make your selection and either gift the glass or buy flowers and arrange them in the glass. Glass tableware is available at Blenko Glass gift shop from $ 35 to $300. Some small items marbles, frogs etc may be had for under $15. Occasionally you'll find a small bowl or vase for under $35. All items are greatly reduced from the list price and all are beautifully made, handcrafted Blenko Glass. A gift that was made in the USA, made with PRIDE by a small manufacturer in Southern West Virginia.

Add BLenko GLass to Make Your V- Day very Special for 2009! Note: The glass doesn't have to be Pink or Red for V-Day any color Blenko Glass vase or tableware is appropriate for V-Day!

Harry Thompson - Another Great Blenko Craftsman

Photos of Airtwist glasses - can you identify? Photo of Harry Thompson and Harry Thompson and his young son. Harry Thompson Former Blenko Craftsman.

Can you identify this airtwist? Apparently neither Larry of Serenity Glass Or Damon of Vintage modern could, but I'm betting some Blenko Collector will have the key to this mystery. Your comments.

Larry and his wife Bev are helping us prepare a HARRY THOMPSON page on the http://www.blenkoproject.org/ website did you or your relative work for BLENKO GLASS? If so ssend your photos, your bio etc to theblenkoproject@aol.com so we might document the work.

Hillary, Bev and our friend Jo have went through our notes and are ready to send a short version of bio. Here are photos of an air twist compote next to 489 for size comparison that nether Damon nor Larry from Tex can identify, It very old because the bottom is worn and there are very fine scratches in the bowl as if it had been cleaned a lot. Its 9in tall and 7in across. Thanks Larry T.

Question of the day

Where to buy vintage Blenko Glass locally?

The Purple Moon 906 Quarrier Street Charleston, W. Va. is the source I most enjoy. Chuck and his wife share my love of modern furniture and vintage Blenko. http://www.thepurplemoon.com - Chuck has a website, you can shop on line, and he maintains a blog.
If you have a shop you want to add in the tri - state area email the info to theblenkoproject@aol.com
My national practical board is end of the month - I haven't enough time before the exam but after I'll attempt to do a list of safe ebay sellers, and local sellers from the emails you have sent the last six months.
New collectors will value this information. Thank you.

SIZE MATTERS

Damon Crane knows 'glass arts' and Blenko Glass, he writes often about Blenko. His Vintage Modern glasshouse Newsletter is free of cost and always educational and usually provocative. ( learn more about Modern Glass including Blenko glass by reading and subscribing to this newsletter, reprinted in part with DC's permission and a link to the Glasshouse Newsletter).

Size Matters
The Vintage Modern glasshouse Newsletter, Issue No.12

Bigger is not always better, but all things being equal, size does matter! The Architectural Scale genre introduced by Wayne Husted, pioneered by Winslow Anderson and produced by the Blenko Glass Company is a pivotal proto-Studio Glass development in the production glass field. Whereas Tiffany had “Favrille Glass,” Kosta had Ariel glass, and Venini had Incalmo, the Blenko Glass Company had Architectural Scale. Unequivocally, the Architectural Scale genre is the single most important innovation in mid-century American glass.

Gift Shop at Blenko was ReStocked TODAY!

At Blenko Glass in Milton, West Virginia the Gift Shop / Visitors Center tables are completely filled with glassware for you to purchase.

New Glass from the warehouse was put into the Gift Shop this morning.

If you were at the gift shop on Saturday and noticed the tables were near empty, come back! The men at Blenko Glass restocked the Gift Shop today says Connie of Blenko Glass.

We do not have photos of available glass, may I suggest you drive to Milton, or phone 304 743 9081 about the glass. HJH
If you haven't written or phone your local, state and national representatives about the current situation at Blenko Glass, please take time to do so. Need the addresses or contact info? email theblenkoproject@aol.com

Questions and Answers for The Week.

#1 Do you get Free Glass from Blenko?
NO! I have never received glass at no cost from Blenko Glass.

#2 Will the Blenko Collectors Society be meeting this year? Will they close if Blenko closes?
Blenko Glass is still open, and to my knowledge the BCS will remain a club regardless. Write the letters, phone your delegates now. Join the Blenko Collectors Society to learn more about WV Glass and Blenko Glass.

#3 What can we do to help?
On Saturday after the closure - We posted addresses for state, local and national officials. We suggested writing and phoning. We wrote to Blenko Glass to ask what else. When other suggestions are given we'll post. If you have suggestions, please comment on the blog or else start a group email. Take Action!

#4 Is there Glass in the Visitors Center for Sale?
This is a frequently (6 or more per day) question. I write daily to Blenko about this, There is glass in the Gift Shop! Please shop Blenko Glass gift shop. If you are a wholesaler the warehouse is also open. Don Lemley in the Antique Glass division is available 8 -10 hours each day for selling and taking orders. Blenko has a reduced (skeleton) staff but they are OPEN! When any of this changes - I'll post or if you see a change please write to the blog.

#5 Why do you seem to love Texas so much?
The collectors from Texas - and there are many, have been very generous with sharing photos of their glass, I'm a full time student. I do not have an extensive glass collection, I rely on readers for photos, stories, and their glass collections.
If emphasis is placed on Texas - its because the Texans (Calif and Ohio also are active) have been sending photos.
Send your photos, promote your business, I have no bias, only a need for photos of beautiful Blenko Glass.

#6 What will you do if Blenko closes?
I don't work for Blenko Glass. I will in June start as a Dental resident at OSU. However, the men and women who work for Blenko Glass, will be losing their jobs, many have worked there for over 20 years. We are believing BLENKO GLASS will not close. That you the Collectors and the Community the Government will come to the aide of Blenko Glass. We can't afford to lose another manufacturer in this State, in this Country. Certainly not one that is the only remaining manufacturer of mouth blown antique glass.
When you combine the knowledge of the 'Men of Blenko' its a resource the State of WV can not afford to lose.

#7 Are you related to the Blenkos? Why do you like Milton and WV so much?
I am not a blood relative of Blenko. Visit Milton, and if you don't like it email me at theblenkoproject@aol.com .
As a child & teen and even now, when I traveled I always liked returning home, I appreciate the mountains, the rivers, the 'character' of West Virginians, I've always felt proud to be from West Virginia.

The End? I'm Voting for an Act III

Blenko Glass, an American family tradition.

Press Release:January 30, 2009
Blenko Glass Company announced today that it is shutting down production and is discussing with its counsel whether it should consider filing for bankruptcy. The Blenko Visitor’s Center will continue to remain open. The Milton based manufacturer of hand made glass was sued by Big Two Mile, its former gas supplier, four years ago because of a disagreement about the payments due for gas used at the factory. A court found in favor of Big Two Mile and entered a judgment against Blenko for more than $500,000 in September of 2005. Several proposals for settlement of the case were made by Blenko; none of the proposals was accepted.Over the past three years members of the Blenko Family were in contact with members of the Maier Family who are the owners of Big Two Mile. Blenko was led to understand that Big Two Mile would not take steps to shut down Blenko. Relying on those assurances Walter Blenko of Pittsburgh PA and Don Blenko of Wellesley MA invested more than 2 million dollars in Blenko in an effort to return the company to profitability. In recent months the company’s losses had been reduced and Blenko management was looking forward to seeing a positive cash flow in the company’s operations. On January 15, 2009, Big Two Mile took steps to seize “all amounts, deposits, and moneys” in the Blenko Glass bank accounts including its payroll and withholding accounts. Blenko first learned of Big Two Mile’s action on January 23, when Blenko’s bank reported that the bank accounts had been emptied.Blenko had issued a check on that day to pay for gas that it used in its glass making furnaces. When Blenko learned its funds had been seized it was able to recover the check which was already in the mail. Because of nonpayment Blenko’s gas supplier has refused to supply gas for the glass making process after January 31, 2009. Blenko has therefore shut down its furnaces and some of them will be destroyed due to the loss of heat.Blenko employs approximately 50 employees. Walter Blenko, President of Blenko Glass, said “I want to thank and pay tribute to the many loyal employees of Blenko Glass who worked diligently and faithfully against bad economic conditions to keep the company operating and producing world renowned Blenko Glass up until the last day.”For further information please contact: Walter Blenko, President, or Katie Trippe, Assistant Vice President, at (304) 743-9081.

Send Your Letters Asking Support For Blenko

West Virginia Glass - The Men of Blenko

Can any of Collectors identify the source of these WV Glass sets?

If you follow the blog - you know I'm reaching out for histories of former BLENKO GLASS workers, Harry Thompson's family is helping me with the Harry Thompson page, I'm getting to know Harry. Who was very skilled, well liked craftsperson at Blenko. Harry left Blenko while he was still a young man and move to Indiana in an effort to make a better life for his family. This note about Harry and the photo reminded me how very connected the glass workers are to oneanother but also to the community at large.

Harry Thompson had friends in Weston here he often went to get glassworking tool made or repaired. The friends from Weston gave him this glassware because they knew he liked to hunt and had a birddog. Larry T.

Most all the men at Blenko have an interest in the out doors and nature, they hunt, they fish, they are active in their local communities. When Blenko Glass Company would loose an employee the community would loose a leader. Such was the case when Harry Thomson left Milton and Blenko
This week BLENKO GLASS Company shut down the furnaces, the Visitors Center Gift Shop is open selling the last of the glass that has been produced. The future looks bleak for BLENKO GLass. I ask you to think for a while about the communities around Milton, the loss to the communities if these 50 men are forced to leave and look for work else where. Blenko Glass employees are involved in their communities. They not only pay taxes, buy groceries and support the local businesses they are 4-H leaders, Scout Leaders, School Volunteers, Parent Teacher Association Leaders, Senior Citizen Volunteers, Readers for Local Nursing Homes, Habitat for Humanity Volunteers and the list goes on.
The men and women of Blenko Glass are a part of your community. Don't stand idle by and allow this to happen
your community.
Thanks to Larry and Bev Thompson for this and many other photos!
Please send your photos to theblenkoproject@aol.com

Treasure Chest of Long Forgotten Items !
The men at Blenko Glass www.blenkoglass.com are cleaning out the warehouse, many items from long, long ago are moving to the gift shop.
Now is the time to visit BLENKO GLASS gift shop. 304 743 9081.

Blenko . . . Blenko . . . Blenko . .

The questions are: Hillary, 1) What Blenko Glass items are you still looking for? 2) Does my glass with a very small hair line crack still have value? Or should I buy a piece with a small flaw? My response to What I am looking for : Many many items the 5949, many of the Winslow items, any thing Hank Adams did after Blenko, and all the Husted decanters. 2) I'd buy a flawed piece and display it until I could find a perfect piece - then trade up. But then I'd a bit weird. Damon Crane had this to say!
This design is, in my extensive experience, not only one of the rarest of Wayne Husted's designs but also one of the most iconic and sought after. It is also a tremendously important one. For this reason I have no qualms offering this one which is priced exceptionally well - in fact, below my cost - because it is damaged . Fortunately, the damage, a hairline crack on the thin edge, is not distracting under normal display conditions because the decanter is viewed head-on from the front. It is rare indeed that I will consider selling an item with any issue, however a piece of this calibre and rarity makes for a healthy exception. For comparison please see this page where I am offering a mint condition Sea Green 6316.
It is entirely appropriate for this very mature design to have been created by Wayne Husted during is very last year as the Blenko Glass Company's designer – only a seasoned maestro would concoct such a creature. One can be utterly ignorant of all things Blenko and still look at this design and immediately recognize something unique and special; it is a shape with universal gravitas.
On a more concrete level this shape evinces the deep inspiration Husted found in modern art. I do not label this decanter "Surrealist" lightly or merely on an aesthetic level, rather is it a strong conceptual kinship that informs my association. Surrealism was a controversial branch of modern art, rife as it was with theatrical showmen like Salvador Dali – but then it is hard to deny just such a tendency in Husted! Surrealism was a very rich and refined outgrowth of the conceptual approach to art making; exploring fantastical and transcendental imagery, and very concerned with iconography and deeply held, if subconscious, concepts. Does any part of that description NOT apply to this design?

Here we have one of Husted's last works, a shape that in many ways sums up his 10 year's work at Blenko. The subversion of the vessel is in full force and yet, paradoxically, this subversion results in a form so iconically bottle-like that it is undeniable. At the same time it is not at all a natural shape for blown glass; like Anderson's beautiful #999 ships decanter glass does not easily take such a dramatic shape as it cools too quickly to fully fill the wooden mold it is blown into, requiring strength and skill on the part of the blower and determination and vision on the part of the designer. But the result “feels” natural despite in actuality being quite forced. The rich paradoxes at play in this design are a testament to Husted's entire oeuvre at Blenko.
This decanter is part of a series of three designs Husted made in 1963 that explored the same approach; flattened squared forms. See the complete set below. http://www.vmglass.com/

Above, the full series of three flattened "Surrealist" decanters from 1963, L to R: 6316 in Tangerine, 6314 in Sea Green and 6315 in Turquoise

Fostoria Boudoir Set

Fostoria Glass Museum6th St. at Tomlinson Ave.Moundsville, WV 26041 Open Wed. thru Sat.1 to 4 PMMarch thru NovemberPhone: (304)845-9188
My Dad's parents lived in Wheeling, West Virginia. Their best friends were Graham and Gracie Nightingale. The Nightingales had no children of their own, so they graciously treated 'all friends children" as their own. Gracie was a very petite lady, who loved fine living. She liked to make elaborate dinner for Graham, she knew about wine, she loved to travel. She impressed me upon she meeting. Her home was beautiful. Yet, she loved to shop flea markets and she like yard sales, something my own grandma would never be caught doing. Gracie just loved life. Today I thought of Gracie, only because Larry of Serenity Glass sent this photo of Fostoria Boudoir Accessories. Gracie's' dressing table had these and 2 dozen others. It was a beautiful colorful delightful dressing table filled with silver or silver plated lipstick holders, compacts, glass and gilded everything! Gracie was a lady of this vintage.
Gracie died in late 99 and my own Grandma died soon after during my junior year of High School. Seems like a long time ago - Thank you Larry for reminding me of these two beautiful ladies, of the wonderful, simple way they took care of themselves, their homes, their possessions, and how loved they made everyone who knew them feel. Perhaps the mystic of the boudoir accessories is thought of time for self? I find these items irresistible. I'm not certain if Larry has these available for purchase? If you do Larry I'll add a link to your shop - let me know.

What Can We Do To Help ?

The question I am ask most often in emails is What can we do to help?
I posed this question to Blenko and if they reply with suggestions I'll post them here. In the mean time . . . .
Have you written or phone the offices of Govenor Manchin? Senators? State Legislators?
If not, do so today! Remember to look before you purchase and whenever possible buy local, buy made in USA always.
Teachers*: Your students enjoyed field trips to Blenko why not write Class Letters to the Govenor and Senators in support of Blenko? * This wasn't my idea but a teacher from Ohio County suggested she was having her class write and perhaps other should also.
Support BLENKO GLASS, not just with your purchases but with your letters, and phone calls to our government officials.
We can't stand idly by and allow these Men, the Men of Blenko Glass, to leave our community.
BLENKO GLASS is a West Virginia Company, these men and women are your neighbors.
The #2 question most ask in my email is about the value of glass, and should you sell or hold on to your glass.
Let me begin this by saying I'm a 4th year (DDS) Dental Student in my 20s not a glass art or investment expert. I gifted to WVU my Blenko Glass collection 16 months ago in an effort to have Blenko Glass seen by the thousands of parents and students visiting the WVU campus.
It is my belief that long term BLENKO GLASS will never go down in value, that you should always buy only the glass you love and want to live with. I remain hopeful that BLENKO GLASS will remain a part of Milton and West Virginia. While this is a very bleak time, I have not given up hope.
The #3 questions is the Blenko Collectors.
I don't have new information - but when new information is on their website I'll publish the info, and you can ask to be put on their mailing list also. My recommendation is to join the Collectors Club, to learn more about Blenko Glass and to be with others who enjoy collecting and learning about WV Glass.
hjh

Milton West Virginia and Blenko Glass were an important part of my growing up, as a litle girl my Dad and I would go almost every week to Milton for Blenko Glass then lunch . Over the years I've watched the road become wider, the new, beautiful Welcome To Milton display by the Master Gardeners and many other changes. It seems Stewarts Hot Dog Stand , the antique stores and Blenko remain unchanged. Milton is the kind of town, other people can only dream about or see on television, a small town, where people meet at Granny K's or the VFW to solve the worlds problems and everyone knows everyone else and is willing to help a neighbor . Visiting Milton and Blenko Glass. Spending time with glass workers & artist, and attempting to do arts helped to shape the person I am, a person who values family, hard work, beauty, honesty, who trys to remain positive, and to see the good in the world.
The next generation deserves to have the privilege of experiencing BLENKO GLASS and learning about Milton, WV also.
Have you ever seen the look on a child's face the first time they see glass being made at Blenko? It is priceless.

Vintage Blenko On Ebay - NO!

My parents still tell stories about sending Fostoria , Cambridge and Wheeling Glass to the Goodwill when my Nana

died as they had no place to store anything else! Can you imagine? They were young (late 30 early 40? ) and crazy is how they describe themselves. The people who sold these items to the Specht family were like my parent 'they' didn't know what they were selling!

Perhaps you too can, educate yourself - do this by joining the Blenko Collectors Society and then start looking at Vintage Shops, Flea Markets, places like Kissing Kate for the item you want. Below is Specht's story.

Hi,Thought I would share a photo of a couple EBAY "finds" from two weeks ago. They just got delivered today. The Husted "High-heel bowl" set me back $3.99 and the spiral wrapped vase was only $4.99. Great pair to have found at incredible prices. For those I have seen complain about Ebay I offer up these as examples. I looked at VM glasshouse and the Husted piece that he has in Chartreuse is listed at $595.00. The other High-heel bowl that is charcoal and is shown in the collections page was a similar find at $12.00.Enjoy,Bruce Specht

King Family's Blenko

When there is NEW info about Blenko we'll break into the Blogger cycle to update you. Hillary,

A few pieces of Blenko from our home.

This photo shows 2 Blenko vases in the Muranese sommerso style (by Joel Myers) that were a special limited production in the mid 1960's. The vase on the left was signed by Joel Myers. The vase on the right, as the story goes, was a gift from Blenko to then WV Governor Arch Moore. When Gov. Moore left office he did not take the vase with him. A WV State Trooper returned the vase to Blenko where Red Powers came into possession of it. We got the vase from Red. It is signed by William Blenko. The decanter is, of course, a Blenko Gump's decanter also from the mid 1960's. The color is turquoise. This is our starter to a complete set (someday).
I hope you enjoy the photograph.

Tim & Linda King
Kissin Kate's Antiques LLC
Note: Mr. and Mrs. King, The story you have is I believe a true one. I adore these vases, my parents saw them at Ms. Phyliss' and we spoke with both Mr. Myers and Gov Moore's family about the vases, they were presented to Gov Moore who thought they were beautiful. Many items were presented to the Gov over the time he was in office, they didnt know what happen to the items after. Its certainly possible they were returned to Blenko. They are lovely, they were once in the Governor's office and your family will take great care of them of this I'm certain.
Thank you for sharing!

2 Glass Craftsmen from the Factory Oct 31 through Nov 28, 1982 Huntington Galleries, Huntington, West Virginia
This was an exhibit of work done on their lunch hours by Everette Shorty Finley and Jessie Carpenter.
The items were offered for sale. Many were sold, later the items not sold were shown at the West Virginia Cultural Center. Its was a great time for GLASS ARTS in West Virginia. Shorty Finley's 32 piece chess set with table and cover was in the exhibit - it was offered for sale but no buyer - When time came to take it home, Shorty had no place to store the set - Mr. Blenko offered to let him 'show it off' at the upstairs Visitors Center. It's been there ever since. There's no sign saying the set was blown by Shorty only a sign saying it was designed by Don Shepperd. Story goes - Don drew a dozen or more figures before Shorty finally approved one. Don and Shorty often worked after hours, weekends and on lunch hours on private projects .

The Huntington Museum of Art has a magnificent collection of glass. The Huntington Museum of Art glass collection contains over 4000 examples of the glass maker's art, ranging from ancient glass to sculpture from the modern studio glass movement. Among the highlights are many examples from the Wilbur Myers Collection, which consists primarily of 19th and early 20th century European and American art glass.
You don't need to leave Cabell county to view great American and European Art Glass.
The website is easy to use, the museum is user friendly, the grounds are beautiful, if you go, write about your experience. This isn't your 'usual' museum. This is a friendly museum where they want you to 'share' their love of the object, and love of learning. http://www.hmoa.org/

Everette SHORTY Finley

Photos- Shorty and I on a day when his health is good, and a photo of the 'LADY' -factoid - Shorty says, he made all the "Lady'Blenko vases . So if you have a Blenko 'lady', ya might want to ask Shorty to sign her, if it wasn't signed by the designer, the one I own is signed by both WHB and Shorty. hjh

Everette " Shorty" Finley may not be the Best finisher / blower Blenko Glass to work at Blenko glass, but he was certainly one of the most colorful. His work was always excellent, and he is one of two Blenko craftsmen I collect. Shorty is gregarious, he never sees a stranger, his loves of working with glass is the first thing one notices, he also wants to share his love, he wants you to "TRY" working with glass, he feels if you attempt you'll have an appreciation for the 'skill' and you will develop an understanding of the cost associated with glass making. Shorty didn't have a lot of formal education, but he is a very bright man.

He was a hard working man his entire life. Blenko Glass, and his family were and are today the loves of his life. Shorty would rather talk about or if the opportunity arises go over to Blenko than do anything else. Most days he gets up before 4am goes to the local Gas Station for coffee a biscuit and some conversation then out to his farm to feed the livestock then back home to rest and nap, he goes back to the farm in the afternoon. On warm days he works at the farm 6-8 hours a day. Breaking only to hunt or fish on the farm. The joys in his life include short trips with his sons or grandchildren and his friend Boyd. Shorty also enjoys going out for 'chicken dinners' at the KFC with friends.
For a little more than 7 days now Shorty has had a flu, he's staying in. If you live in Milton, give him a call or send a card . If you don't have his address send the card c/o Blenko Glass Company. I know from the experience with my own grandparents after age 65 everyone enjoys receiving cards! Thanks for listening.

BLENKO GLASS Gift shop -Visitor Center Is Open TODAY!

Blenko Glass has shut down the finances - the future is bleak for Blenko Glass.

The Visitor Center - gift shop will be open this week. I was there on Saturday with my family. We bought Christmas gifts for 2009. Business was very heavy, Diana had to phone for help at the register.

Problem is - how much more product do they have in the warehouse to sell? My suggestion is to phone your order in immediately, or if you live near West Virginia drive to Milton. We saw maybe 10 lamps, only 2 sets of matching lamps. WVU and Marshall items were still in stock, Mindy Lemley hand painted glass was still available. Water bottles ( color selection was limited), many hand signed items, many 1st quality items. These items will not last. If you are a collector of Blenko and want to buy at the source, this may very well be your last opportunity.

Yesterday it felt like a 'wake' shoppers who knew BLENKO and the product were sharing stories about bring all their out of town guest to Blenko, about buying gifts for out of town events at Blenko, some people had tears in their eyes. One older lady spoke of Marion and Bill Blenko. I took photos of the remaining glass and will daily add a post to the blog about remaining glass - just photos for you.

Todays photos are of BLENKO shoppers, who don't consider themselves collectors but who have a shelve or two of Blenko and Mr. Curnutte's family reports, " he knows more about Blenko than most Blenko employees, he was always very proud of having handblown glass from a local company."

I Get By - With A Little Help From My Friends

When the Beatles sang "I get by with a little help from my friends" at Woodstock in 1969 they couldn't have known about Heart of Glass.

When I started the Heart of Glass - I envisioned a place where 'glass lovers' would communicate - chat - send their photos, write post, exchange information, and in general it would be a blog of glass lovers not Hillary's blog. As I knew my schedule & my knowledge would never allow for full time daily blog. But I envisioned " A place where I could get by with help from my glass friends!"

Some days - When Wayne Husted, Marvin L., Henry H. Joel M, Mr. Hunt, Matt C, * or other (for me) Totally Awesome Famous Glass Person - either answers my question or helps with a question or add information - It is such a feeling of Bliss! Combine this with the energy the glass community - each of you - puts into making this blog work! We remain one of the top blogs at the Huntington Herald- because of your work!
Glass Art is alive and well, the collecting of Glass Art will continue for ever! Heart of Glass appreciates each and every one of you. . . . your photos, your comments, your time! Together we can revive interest in Blenko Glass collecting and West Virginia Glass Collecting!
Support the Glass Arts!
* Today I'm a name dropper!
I mentioned the artist - but also collectors - from West Virginia and TEXAS and California who freely send there photos. We welcome photos and stories from everyone. Please share your photos and BLenko OR WEST VIRGINIA Glass stories with us. Thank you all when I count my blessings, I count each of you twice.

Hi Hillary,
I am forwarding the following photo for two reasons. First in appreciation to Wayne Husted for his correcting my error on the '61-'62 Charcoal mixup. I had honestly never noticed that Charcoal was listed in the Pina '62 reference book until he corrected my misstatement about the possibility of the 6210 decanter not supposedly made in charcoal. The second reason is to share about finding the 638M in a local Antique Mini Mall in one of surrounding communities. I had just about given up looking for the day when I made myself look up and there sitting on the top shelf was this pristine 638M in Jonquil crackle. At only $14.00 I felt like I had pulled a gun on the cashier in order to leave the store with this treasure. This was the second 638M for me as I have one also in Turquoise. I found the body in a local store and then a week later stumbled across the stopper in an antique store a hundred miles away while visiting Debbie's mother in Sherman, Texas. Total cost was about the same. The other decanter is of coarse the "Gumps" decanter, also in Jonquil. I recently found this on Ebay and this leaves us with only the "Peacock" piece to complete our set.
Enjoy,
Bruce Specht
Note: Blogger is on automtic (written 7 -8 in advance ) post, I'll break the cycle anytime there is NEW News about Blenko!
