Heart of Glass
Blenko Glass is a West Virginia treasure that spans generations. Nothing symbolizes the state of West Virginia better or more beautifully than Blenko Glass. We will discuss current and former craftsmen and designers and how important it is that Blenko and West Virginia glass be appreciated and valued by the younger generation.

Last American Manufacturer of Mouth-blown Sheet Glass to Close Doors!

Perserverance is a Blenko family trait. Also a trait of the Blenko Glass Company. Blenko has persevered through four generations , its been counted 'down and almost out' many times in the 23 years I've been living - but I'm fearful this is the end. Without a miracle, or some magnificent plan (that I know nothing about) - I can't imagine Blenko will reopen. It is a sad day. We are loosing the only manufacturer in Cabell County , the main attraction in Milton, West Virginia, 50-60 families are loosing their jobs, for many the only job they have ever known.

My own mind is riddled with the information. Knowing how deep Mr. WH Blenko Jr. feels for Milton, the workers, and the factory, one of my prayers had always been that he would at age 80+ never see Blenko close.

The finances are shut down, and the picture is bleak, but until we hear the final words of closure Blenko - The Blenko Glass Company remains as the only American manufacturer of mouth-blown sheet glass. Are we ready to see another American manufacturer - a local WVa manufacturer close? I know nothing of government interventions etc. but . . . .there should be something someone can suggest.

BLENKO GLASS SHUTTING DOWN PRODUCTION

Katie Trippe sent the following information! I think this means the Visitors Center is open now and will be selling the GLASS that has been made. No new glass is being made. The furnaces are shut down. This is very serious situation. (304 743 9081. )
Blenko Glass Company, Inc.
P.O. Box 67
Milton, WV 25541
January 30, 2009
For Immediate Release
Blenko Glass Company announced today that it is shutting down production and is discussing with its counsel whether it should consider filing for bankruptcy. The Blenko Visitor’s Center will continue to remain open. The Milton based manufacturer of hand made glass was sued by Big Two Mile, its former gas supplier, four years ago because of a disagreement about the payments due for gas used at the factory. A court found in favor of Big Two Mile and entered a judgment against Blenko for more than $500,000 in September of 2005. Several proposals for settlement of the case were made by Blenko; none of the proposals was accepted.
Over the past three years members of the Blenko Family were in contact with members of the Maier Family who are the owners of Big Two Mile. Blenko was led to understand that Big Two Mile would not take steps to shut down Blenko. Relying on those assurances Walter Blenko of Pittsburgh PA and Don Blenko of Wellesley MA invested more than 2 million dollars in Blenko in an effort to return the company to profitability. In recent months the company’s losses had been reduced and Blenko management was looking forward to seeing a positive cash flow in the company’s operations.
On January 15, 2009, Big Two Mile took steps to seize “all amounts, deposits, and moneys” in the Blenko Glass bank accounts including its payroll and withholding accounts. Blenko first learned of Big Two Mile’s action on January 23, when Blenko’s bank reported that the bank accounts had been emptied.
Blenko had issued a check on that day to pay for gas that it used in its glass making furnaces. When Blenko learned its funds had been seized it was able to recover the check which was already in the mail. Because of nonpayment Blenko’s gas supplier has refused to supply gas for the glass making process after January 31, 2009. Blenko has therefore shut down its furnaces and some of them will be destroyed due to the loss of heat.
Blenko employs approximately 50 employees. Walter Blenko, President of Blenko Glass, said “I want to thank and pay tribute to the many loyal employees of Blenko Glass who worked diligently and faithfully against bad economic conditions to keep the company operating and producing world renowned Blenko Glass up until the last day.”
For further information please contact: Walter Blenko, President, or Katie Trippe, Assistant Vice President, at (304) 743-9081.

Wissmach Glass Company

Another Glass Company my Dad and I visited monthly when I was growing up was Wissmach. I knew at least a half dozen of the men at Wissmach by first name or nickname. Frequently they would gift me a box of small pieces of colorful glass. Glass at the time was .50 cents a pound. These Saturday trips to Wissmach were great adventures, spending time with the men who made the glass, then having tea in the office with the ladies, and later having lunch at one of the little restaurants in the outskirts of town. Life was simple, pleasures were found in everything, and joys were abudant. Wissmach continues to produce fine glass. The number of workers has decreased. The town is much smaller. The price of scrape glass has greatly increased. The men I knew (except for one) are retired. With their permission I'm reprinting the history of Wissmach. Later I'll do photos of the Company and its product. Another West Virginia Glass Company. Don Lemley http://www.blenkoglass.com/ I think would agree with me, that Wissmach & Blenko are the BEST glass for stain glass Artist.

The History of Wissmach Glass Company

A century ago, on October 13, 1904 the Ohio Valley Glass Company was founded by Paul Wissmach. The company originally manufactured raised glass letters, wire glass and tubing. But Mr. Wissmach had a dream to create beautiful colored rolled sheet glass to inspire stained glass work, today his dream has been built into the manufacturer of the largest variety of colored rolled sheet glass in the world.
The year 1910 marked an important date in the company's history as it changed its name to The Paul Wissmach Glass Company, Inc. Mr. Wissmach's dream had finally been realized.
Wissmach Glass has not been without its share of hardships. A fire in 1927 completely destroyed vital manufacturing and warehouse facilities. The fire turned out to be a blessing-in-disguise as the company quickly recovered with new and larger buildings.

The increased factory area led the company to expand its interest into the field of manufacturing raised white opal letters. The letters were widely used in electrical signs of which theater marquee sales made up the largest volume. The glass letter market eventually gave way to plastics. During the same period of the late 1920's and 1930's, Wissmach Glass continued to manufacture patterned wire glass and also introduced its line of Neo-Flash - the only rolled flashed glass in the country. Neo-Flash was designed and widely-used in the lighting field.
Both Neo-Flash and wire glass were dropped from the line in the early 1960's as company officials decided to concentrate on producing the finest colored rolled sheet glass. Today, over 13,000 square feet of glass is produced in Wissmach's manufacturing facility each day. On average, eight to ten different color runs of glass are made daily.

Throughout the years, Wissmach Glass has built an inventory that includes over 3,000 colors, tints and patterns. While preserving the many traditional colors and mixes of the past, Wissmach constantly introduces new colors and types of glass to meet the demands of the artists of today and the artists of tomorrow.

When folks ask us questions about collecting glass we offer only one piece of advice -- Collect the pieces that make you smile.
Attached is a picture of snowmen coming to grips with their fate.

For note: The 3 standing snowmen are Blenko from various years and the melting snowman is from Dave Osburn (my favorite).

Vintage Wheeling WVa Glass

Where to find that VINTAGE glass? If you can't get out or don't have the time to get out, or the money to just hire someone to find the item? EBAY seems to be one answer. This Vintage Wheeling Glass item is currently on Ebay for a very reasonable price. While I promote buying locally - check out Ebay. Look for local sellers, and ask your friends who is a reliable seller.
Description provided by seller follows:

Full Water Set (7 pieces) from the collectible line that Weishar Enterprises introduced in 1993. The collectible lines were made from the original moulds and only slightly altered to include the Weishar signature. The signature is that of the late Joseph J. Weishar (the creator of the moon and star glass you have come to love and collect over the years.
This set includes the pitcher and 6 water or tea glasses. It is in Mint condition. PERFECT! Pitcher is about 8 1/4" tall at highest point. The glasses stand about 5 1/2" tall.
I have spoke with a person from Weishar Enterprises this week and was told that this water set is called the Apple Green Opal Water Set ... Produced in 1996 ... There were only 53 total of these sets made. Very Very Limited Addition. He also let me know that they were selling for over $500.00 10 years ago. I was told that to get another or run across another one of these, chances would be 0 to none. I was very fortunate to find this at a local estate sale. It is absolutely Gorgeous and my camera could not catch all its beauty. The opalescence is just lovely.
FYI: The moon and star design (also known as "the palace" is a Victorian Pattern which was first introduced in the 1800's. The pattern was very popular, but due to the heaviness of the glass, transporting it by stagecoach was difficult and not practical. The pattern was produced only for a short time. It was actually President Abraham Lincoln's favorite piece and was collected by the late Kate Smith. In the 1960's approximate ten of the original pieces were reproduced by Joseph J. Weishar of Wheeling, West Virginia. The Moon & Star design was incorporated into thirty to forty new items which were sold nationwide for several years. In 1988, Weishar Enterprises introduced half-scale miniatures of both the Victorian and later contemporary pieces. 1993 the collectible line was introduced (made in full size). That is where this set comes from.....
ONLY 53 MADE..... IT IS A CHANCE TO HAVE ONE OF THE RAREST MOON AND STAR WATER SETS EVER MADE.

Great West Virginia Glass

I was aware of Seneca Glass, Louie Glass, Fostoria, Wheeling Glass and a few of the Northern Companies. My Gdad was a Regional Manager for Continental Glass before my birth - however, this reader is correct. I haven't promoted these lovely glass wares. I haven't gone to this study group. I will begin to attend. I will start to ask for photo of ALL WEST VIRGINIA GLASS or Glass made by ANY West Virginia Craftsman. This comes at a good time. Blenko Glass has so busy of late, getting photos and info to me has been a chore for them. This will take some burden off the girls in the office at Blenko. Please if you collect any West Virginia Glass feel free to add your 2 cents worth - or pass along the blog to your friends. Beginning soon, we will start to include all West Virginia Glass. If you have photos of Seneca Glass that was used in the White House - I'd love to post those photos! hjh
Hillary
Being a student at West Virginia University means living in the Northern Panhandle and learning about our glass history, have you? If not may I invite you to our glass group or to the museum?
We have a very serious group of glass collector and we study weekly to learn and grow.
The glass made in Morgantown was excellent, I think you will find once you study this glass no other West Virginia Glass can compare. The quality was excellent. Fine tableware was made. It was used in the homes of presidents, senators, emperors world wide. As you young people say 'check us out' and then add us to your list of glass to write and brag about, we also photograph well.

Capicorn Birthday - Happy Birthday Em and Tif

Saturday after Give A Kid A Smile - I drove back to Morgantown for 2 Birthday Celebrations an evening of sushi and cover bands with my Em and Company and I'll today Celebrate the Birthday of my friend Tiffany with her husband, her family and a small group of Dent friends. I was thinking of how both these women are strong, both are very talented in domestic skills (they sew and cooks and know to to fix things), perhaps there is something to this birth sign study.
Webmaster Steve provided me with this over view of Capricorn. The birth sign for Tif and Em.
Neither have married younger or older men. Tif is married and Em is in a long term relationship both aver very motivated to succeed, both are gifted, strongly organized, both get on well with others, both are leaders, Both are successful in their chosen area of study and in life. HAPPY BIRTHDAY LADIES.
Saturn rules the practical sign of Capricorn and controls the month of January. You are strongly motivated to succeed and gain a position of power in your life. You are gifted with computers and you possess strong organizational principles. More than any other sign of the Zodiac you strive for respect and accomplishment in your career. Saturn is a karmic planet and rules your life, thus you must avoid nurturing depressing thoughts. The part of God in you is much stronger than the stars you inherited, and you do have power over the universal mind. You were born in the middle of the winter when nature was asleep. You must have realized early on, that nothing would come easily to you. Like the goat slowly but surely and against all odds (cold/wind/snow) you must climb towards the top of the mountain. The first part of your life has been a long and painful struggle but Saturn will reward you by giving you a long life and a well-deserved position. You will appreciate old age and solid financial security. You may also marry a much younger or older partner. The fluctuations of the Moon strongly affect your mood and career success. The wise Capricorn soul will use his fish tail accordingly and synchronize his life and business with the tides. Steadiness, organization, patience, and charm belong to you. You have a strong architectural or mathematical ability and your keen sense of observation will help you succeed in life.Karmic Saturn will exact payment for manipulating others for selfish ends and will throw the soul back to a painful start. You are attracted to power and successful people and you may marry into wealth. Emotional and sensitive, you are very responsible and protective of the family circle. However you must learn to openly communicate your deep feelings. Your real gifts are Astropsychology, electronics, and any career supported by Uncle Sam. Your natal Dragon can propel you to the highest position and supreme power. But your challenge is to open up to the intangible world of the spirit and its accompanying Universal rules. Your natural tendency to organize people and business at all times could hinder your sensitivity to others. Capricorns are good homemakers and adept with investments. As a rule you favor a successful business environment where you can apply your tremendous organizational gifts. A word of caution for Capricorn: Be aware of those wild acquaintances willing to help you to climb the ladder of success. Remember to respect the Universal Law (see Moon Power), as your awareness of Moon planning will become a major contribution for happiness and success. The location of your natal Dragon's Head or Tail will seriously alter the strength or weakness of Saturn in your chart. (See Nostradamus Dragon Forecast for more information). You can learn much more about yourself or anyone else by ordering my new book entitled "I Know All About You", "The Power Of The Dragon" or "And God Created The Stars".

TAMARACK

Today I started thinking about Tamarack - This is a Center for the Arts and Crafts of WV located near Beckly West Virginia off Interstate I-77 it was created under Governor Caperton. Tamarack has examples of the BEST very Best of all West Virginia Arts. My thoughts were of Tamarack I was putting away a Goebel print of Tamarack that someone had gifted my Mom several years ago . We had failed to get the print framed and needed to properly store it. The building is beautiful - the building alone - is worth the drive to Tamarack. If Goebel prints of the building are still available I'd recommend purchasing a Goebel print.
Tamarack has examples of BLENKO, Osburn Glass, Fenton, and every small glass maker of note in West Virginia. All other arts and crafts are represented. IF you have only one day to visit West Virginia. GO TO TAMARACK! Then decide after viewing everything - what you what to come back to see!

Mission Statement: “The mission of the Tamarack Foundation is to advocate and expand artisan entrepreneurship in order to create a vibrant economy for West Virginia. We do this by developing and training artists and artisans providing them with business development skills, exploring new markets, communicating success stories and raising funds to promote these efforts. The Foundation celebrates West Virginia’s cultural heritage in the context of Tamarack’s brand of excellence.”

A Taste of West Virginia - Is an ongoing event at Tamarack - my own family drives down often on weekends for lunch. The foodcourt has unique regional dishes. Where else can one have food from the GREENBRIER at affordable prices?
A celebration of regional cuisine, A Taste of West Virginia food court, managed by The Greenbrier, features breakfast, grille and deli menu items to entice every appetite. Traditional menu items and unexpected pleasures make in-house dining and off-site catering, as well as meetings and themed functions, a memorable and delectable dining occasion.
Daily specials such as Tamarack’s Tuna Melt or Chicken Pot Pie, contrasted to complex plated dishes of West Virginia Rainbow Trout with Lemon Brown Butter and Braised Beef Sirloin with Sweet Onion Jus, showcase the talents of a well-trained culinary staff. West Virginia-made jams and jellies, salad dressings and mustards, and locally grown trout and catfish are incorporated into daily menus. You also won't want to miss Tamarack's Country Breakfast.
Behind the scenes, A Taste of West Virginia serves positive economic impact into Tamarack’s operational plate. A full-service conference center, catering off-site, and award winning participation in area events and competitions demonstrate the vitality of The Greenbrier’s partnership with Tamarack . www.tamarackwv.com

Everyday Heros - Mike Euler

This post is about my friend Mike Euler. Mike was involved in a life altering accident - the accident happen right after college. Mike had just began his engineering career. The prayers of many people were answered as Mike daily grew stronger and his determination to live and have a life never faltered. People talk about West Virginia values and WV families - The Euler family is an example of a great W.Va. family.

This family stays positive, together, focused and always working and walking on God's path. Many people myself included complain daily about going to the gym, find excuses not to go etc. Mike is in a chair. He has very poor hearing, yet daily he goes off to work and he goes routinely to the gym. He also goes regularly to church.

No excuses is the rule Mike lives by.

He'd be embarassed by this post. But he is a special Man, and a special friend to me and my family!

His Mom had the following to say about him in her Holiday Newsletter.
I'm hoping we can get Mike involved in BLenko Collecting! He needs a more colorful activity than hunting Bambi's. Add Mike to your prayer list - if you keep such a thing, or just add your positive comments for Mike to read.

"Mike is doing really well, too. He is amazing. I think what an amazing guy he is. He never gives up. He is still working everyday, lifting weights around 2 or 3 times a week, gets his own groceries, takes care of getting his medicines, does his own daily care, and goes to church every Sunday with us. We talk to him at least once or twice every day. When I look back, it scares me, but then I think what a miracle we have. He has problems keeping the hearing tuned, but we think it is a little better right now. We keep praying that it will get better. Of course, it is all medical science, since he has no real hearing. Isn't that amazing? It still blows my mind that they can make a deaf ear hear. He has a lot of hip pain. We would appreciate your prayers that something can be done for the hip pain and that his hearing will continue to improve. Of course, he is still after everyone to find him a wife. He didn’t get a deer this year; waited too long for “Mr. Big” who didn’t come by but he enjoyed the hunting. "

Manchin's Inaguration Celebration

Its no secret that I am a major fan of Gov Joe and Gayle Manchin. My friends sometimes say I think " they walk on water" and I don't deny the statement.
Yesterday Gov. Joe Manchin was sworn in for a 2nd term as Governor of West Virginia. It was a cold day, but the large crowd felt connected to one another and to the Governor and Mrs. Gayle Manchin.
Gov. Joe Manchin continues to be the #1 promoter of West Virginia. He wears his heart on his sleeve and we the people of WVa are his heart!
It was very nice to see Mrs (Senator Jay Rockefeller) in attendance and looking radiant and beautiful. The day was cold but bright with hope for the future.
The night was beautiful and again devoted totally to the beauty of our state. On the web you'll find galleries of photos.

Your Blenko Memories

We have been asking you to send in your personal stories, memories, and pictures of Blenko Glass to share.
The following was sent in by a long time friend, artist
Glen Brogan.

"First I need to confess that I am a collector of many things, but glassware has yet to be something that adorns the shelves of my apartment. I’m writing this because it’s a story that means something to me and also happens to have a tie to Blenko Glass.

A year or two ago my friend Kyle’s grandmother passed away. Sometime afterwords Kyle moved into her house since it was left in his family's possession. I helped him get the house in order for his transition into living there, and as we were rearranging furniture I noticed and took interest in a smoky glass globe filled with matchbooks from different places around WV and beyond. As a graphic designer I have always liked the simple logos and illustrations printed on matchbooks, and I have even used them as imagery in my illustrations from time to time, but unfortunately they were never something I had thought to collect. Kyle’s grandmother, however, must have thought to take one from just about every place she visited because the globe was nearly filled to the top. As payment for helping him with the house, Kyle gave me the globe and matchbook collection.

My own grandmother passed away in October, and having now experienced for myself the difficult task of dividing up a passed loved one's possessions, I realize just how hard it is to let go of any relic from their life; not to mention one that must have taken years to assemble and tells a story of places visited and events witnessed. (There were numerous concert tickets in the globe as well.) It wasn’t until I brought the globe home that I noticed the small “Blenko Handcraft” sticker on the side. I never met Kyle’s grandmother, and I wonder what the matchbooks and glass piece meant to her. Maybe she would laugh that somebody would even want it, or maybe she would be puzzled that a person she never met now owns it. The glass looks old, though I guess it’s possible that she had acquired it recently to hold all the matchbooks, or dug it out of the garage.

I wonder the same thing about the items that I took from my own grandmother’s house after she was gone, and even about the things that she gave me while she was alive. I suppose my point in telling this story is that sometimes things you don't expect end up meaning something to you, and you'll never know what your own possessions will mean to the next person who owns them, even if they are just things like a dusty old glass bowl.

For my part I’ve been adding matchbooks to the collection.

-Glen"

Please continue to send in your Blenko photos and stories to share with Heart of Glass!

Blenko in Hollywood

Hillary:

The last photo for tonight…Blenko in Los Angeles. Actually, my office is in Hollywood, but from my window, I can see the city skyline. It’s a great view at sunrise. Thought you might like to see both my “office glass” and my view.

Feel free to share with the bloggers,

What's New for 2009?

For more information, to order or for color info check out www.blenkoglass.com

At Blenko many things will be NEW! Some new items in the 2009 are already OUT and being made. You can view these on the http://www.blenkoglass.com/ website. Web goddess Terri keeps the website current. The website often has a $5.00 off coupon and many times has unadvertised special items.

#9011 swirl decanter and more from Diane!

Hillary:

The #9011 swirl decanter (designed by Hank Adams) in plum and crystal is my latest local find. I had thought it was black until I got it home and checked the catalog. The dark plum was only made in 1990. Way cool. I’ve done VERY well in my local antique malls.

The attached are pieces I found in Palmdale – high desert California, 60 miles from downtown Los Angeles. 963 pitcher in charcoal, 5431 bowl in jonquil, 5611 pitcher in charcoal (it’s the tall one among the shorter 555 cocktail pitchers), a 6955 decanter in lemon, a 7327 milk can in olive, and shock of shocks, the 4-RE Regal pitcher (second shelf from the top on the left in the group picture).

Hope the bloggers enjoy the photos!

Diane

Every day I get emails asking where to buy BLENKO vintage Blenko. My answer is always the same. I recommend buying NEW at the Visitors Center and letting it age. But, for some nothing other than the 50s, 60s, 70s, and even 40s Blenko will do. My Uncle Barry also likes pre designer Blenko. He goes weekly to the Clendenin Auctions held by Mountaineer Auction House. Roger Mullins and Family run these auctions - I admit I have gone only once and then for less than 2 hours - I can report the they had no veggie burgers, the food did smell very good. The people were very friendly and auctioneer talked so very fast! I could never determine who was winning! The evening I went 3 items of Blenko all unusual sold each for less than $100. One item a very tall twisted stem wedding goblet I had not seen before. If you have a free Saturday -the auctions last all day - and you enjoy setting. This maybe the place to find a good piece of vintage BLENKO. Mr. Roger told me they are very careful in identification of the glass they sell. If it isn't marked and they can't determine 100% its origin they just don't use a makers name.
Do you know of other auction galleries in the tri - state? If so add them to our list of Sellers of Blenko - so the newbies will have places to look for vintage Blenko.

Make Mine Crystal!

#555 and #5611 Knob-handled pitchers in Crystal.

There are a group of people who love Blenko crystal, the glasses, candlesticks, bowls, vases etc. While my Dad and I love color, the more color the better, my own Mom prefers crystal.

These items belong to a Texas family.

You'll want to add these to your " Looking for list!"

Who Made this Vase?

Can We Answer this QUESTION? Let's HELP THIS READER! Send your responses to COMMENTS or theblenkoproject@aol.com soon please!
I have a question for you (or for you to pose to your readers):The piece in the following auction is not Blenko: http://cgi.ebay.com/RARE-BLUE-CRACKLE-GLASS-EX-LARGE-BLENKO-MUSHROOM-VASE_W0QQitemZ200298548162QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item200298548162&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A10%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318, but it has often been confused for Blenko. It was misidentified even in Popular '50s and '60s Glass: Color Along the RIver on page 25, at plate 1.45. I have two of them in Tangerine (or, since it's not Blenko, in just an red-orange shade) with the same optic pattern seen in Leslie's book. Who made this vase?
Trick question? I think not - this reader is a serious collector and was a founding BCS member. Put your thinking hats on.

All of these pieces were found for very reasonable prices. The ruby piece I picked up as a "Buy it Now" on EBAY for $5.00 one night a couple years back. The others about the same. Just lots of looking and patience. Good luck.Bruce Specht

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Mountain State's Division I basketball programs have produced a sellout -- again.
For the 10th straight season, the Chesapeake Energy Capital Classic doubleheader between Marshall and West Virginia is a sellout at the Charleston Civic Center. The two schools have sold their ticket allotments for the twinbill next Wednesday night. THE TROPHY MADE BY BLENKO GLASS www.blenkoglass.com is the outstanding player at each of these games. The Heart of Glass Blog will post # 1,000 in jan 2009!
A couple years ago Mr. Walter and Mr. Don Blenko stepped in to aide Mr. WH Blenko and Blenko Glass. The Blenko Family feels devotion to West Virginia and to the men and women who work at Blenko Glass. We as collectors and West Virginians need to also be loyal to Blenko. I'm not certain what we can do to help. Other than BUY BLENKO! Tell your friends and neighbors in other states about Blenko! Word of mouth is the very best advertisement. Quality keeps them coming back!
Its a difficult proposition making glass in today's economy but BLENKO knows their product is A+ nothing compares to handmade West Virginia glass. In quality - but price - well competing with the imports in price - just can't be done. . . . SO we must depend on YOU the consumer to THINK before you buy, BUY quality handcrafted made in the USA products. Check the label.
Keep the JOBS at homes. Buy locally grown foods, fabrics, glass, dishes, marbles, furniture, wood for your fire place.
We need your photos and stories about BLENKO please send to theblenkoproject@aol.com if you don't get a note from me within 5 days - resend I'm having trouble with SPAM control. hjh

January Madness at Blenko!

The Blenko Glass Visitors Center Gift Shop has again marked down glass. The shelf marked clearance is now completely full and there is a 2nd shelf. This is a bargain hunters paradise.
All prices at the Gift Shop are much less than retail and when an item is on the clearance table it may be 75% to 90% off retail price. These prices are very low! Many one of a kind items all over the store. A number of old molds were brought out during the holiday - just to see if they could be used again - one to dozen things were made - not enough for the catalog - but just to experiment - these items went as they always do to the gift shop. When you shop the gift shop. Take your time. Look around. Ask Diane and Mindy, " do you have any 'one of a kind, unusual items, any thing out of the ordinary I might give my Auntie?" or else say : " Hillary, told me you often have one of a kind items, where are they." what ever works for you.
Many sellers report finding 'jewels' at the visitors center. One needs to visit often.
If I lived withing 50 miles of Blenko Glass I'd go twice a week. If I had young children I know I would take them to see glass being made every few months, so their little minds would grasp the memory of this experience and their heritage.
Growing up in West Virginia we often are not told about the things we have to be proud of, when in reality every time we walk out our doors we should feel pride in the very beautiful hills and valleys. West Virginia is a beautiful state filled with people, who value family, truth, honesty, education, religious freedom and hard work. We are always willing to lend a helping hand to a friend in need, or anyone in need. That's just what West Virginians do. http://www.blenkoglass.com/ 304 743 9081

What Are You Looking For?

Vintage Blenko Glass Decanter #566 by Wayne Husted This is Blenko decanter number 566 in purple. It was designed by Wayne Husted for Blenko, circa 1956, and has a. shouldered heavy form with a flattened body. This decanter measures 11 inches tall by 8 inches wide.

My Dad has this in a teal color and this purple. He's looking for other colors in the same decanter.

What are you looking for?

The most successful collectors are the ones who KNOW what they are looking for, perhaps this is true is all life adventures IF you have knowledge about your wants and desires . . . the search will be quieter, quicker, and more successful, also let others know what you are looking for. One reason to join a Collectors Group is to have friends who share your passion for glass and the search for particular glass items. What one person considers beautiful in color and shape another might find not so beautiful . This is true in life and glass collecting, which adds to the fun of collecting with a group.

Check Out Ebay - Blenko Lamps Pair 50's Gold Blenko Lamp

We've been discussing Lamps by Blenko for awhile on this blog. Earlier this week Caroline sent me a link to this Blenko seller. I wrote and receive permission to post photos of her 50's Lamps. These are real beauties with all orginial parts. While I always recommend buying NEW Blenko sometimes for the classics you must buy on the resell market. These lamps are an example of vintage Blenko Lamps.

The new cookie has caramel chips and caramel stripes. All varieties cost $3.50 per box.
Webmaster Steve found the following info about Girl Scout Cookies on the web:

Girl Scout cookies are any of several varieties of cookies sold by Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) as a fundraiser for their local scout units. Members of the GSUSA have been selling cookies since 1917 to raise funds. Top-selling girls can earn prizes for their efforts. There are also unit incentives if the unit as a whole does well. In 2005, over 200 million boxes were sold.

History
The first record of cookie sales by an individual scout unit was by the Mistletoe Troop in Muskogee, Oklahoma, in December 1917. In 1922, the Girl Scout magazine The American Girl suggested cookie sales as a fund-raiser and provided recipes. In 1933, Girl Scouts in Philadelphia organized the first official sale, selling homemade cookies in the windows of local utility companies. The first Girl Scout cookie recipe was a sugar cookie. In 1936 the national organization began licensing commercial bakers to produce cookies. The Boy Scouts had the original idea of selling food (popcorn) in 1914. Later, they invented tagalongs (peanut butter patties) and gave the idea to the Girl Scouts in 1956

During World War II the Girl Scouts sold calendars rather than cookies, due to shortages of flour, sugar, and butter.
If a neighbor girlscout or her parents don't ask you to buy check out the website, they will have someone contact you. For additonal info on these delicious cookies open the link below.

Glass Art Society to Meet In Louisville June 2009

About the Glass Art Society
The Glass Art Society is an international non-profit organization founded in 1971 whose purpose is to encourage excellence, to advance education, to promote the appreciation and development of the glass arts, and to support the worldwide community of artists who work with glass. We hold an annual conference, publish the Glass Art Society Journal, the Glass Art Society Directory & Resource Guide and the bi-monthly GASNews.
GAS strives to stimulate communication among artists, educators, students, collectors, gallery and museum personnel, art critics, manufacturers, and all others interested in and involved with the production, technology and aesthetics of glass. We are dedicated to creating greater public awareness and appreciation of the glass arts.
Membership is open to anyone interested in glass art - artists, students, educators, collectors, gallery and museum personnel, writers, and critics. Members are entitled to vote, hold office, and enjoy all other rights and privileges as determined by the Society's bylaws.
GAS is made up of a Board (elected annually by the full membership and comprised of at least 75% artist/educators and a student representative), a staff of five and a membership of over 2500 glass enthusiasts from 46 countries. Info from GAS website.
They meet in Louisville which is a short 3-4 hour drive for most subscribers to the Huntington Hearld. This is one conference you won't want to miss, if you are a collector, or just a person with appreciation of glass arts.
Louisville is a great city! Much to see and do. Louisville - Representing the point of embarkation for Lewis and Clark’s historic journey; Boasting the first modern artificial heart, the first vaccine against cervical cancer, and the first human hand transplant; Place of origin for Louisville Slugger baseball bats, the song Happy Birthday, chewing gum, “The most exciting two minutes in sports”, and, allegedly, the cheeseburger; Hometown of “The Champ”, Muhammad Ali, Louisville, Kentucky, a.k.a. Possibility City, claims many firsts- including the first public viewing of Edison’s glass light bulb which now universally symbolizes thoughts and ideas. Ingenuity and Possibility are trademarks of Louisville. The city’s nascent but burgeoning glass scene offers an opportunity for individual and community growth rivaled by few other locales. Ingenuity has made Louisville (glass art) what it is today. Possibility will shape its future. In 2010, Louisville will proudly claim another first, the hosting of the 40th annual Glass Art Society conference

Blenko Sppol Decanter

Hillary, I saw this one on Ebay and if I had the money it would be in my living room. If it doesn't sell and they relist after 1/15 it will be in my livingroom. I am sending the description as written by the seller and and the photo.

Sue M.

BLENKO SPOOL DECANTER 587 L Well you WON'T see one of these on Ebay very often!!! This is one of Blenko's rarest and hardest to find decanters. Standing at approx. 37" is this beautiful Turquoise Spool Decanter, designed by Wayne Husted circa '59-60. It has the sandblasted Blenko signature logo on the bottom that was done in 1959 and 1960 only. Overall the condition is wonderful. Upon very close inspection there looks to be a small round/star burst crack. But when I run my finger over it there's nothing to feel which leads me to believe it is internal and was there from the beginning when it was originally hand blown.

Note: If you have photos and or stories about BLENKO GLASS, if you worked or a family member retired from Blenko Glass please contact us at theblenkoproject@aol.com we'd like to make your story a part of The Blenko Project's oral history and also use the story and photos on the Blog.

Heart of Glass has only one objective: To promote West Virginia Glass most especially BLENKO GLASS and perhaps also encourage you to buy locally whenever possible.

Plan now for A Sugarless Valentine's Month

Photo of Blenko Glass WV Birthday Collection 1980.
Caroline from heart of glass blog, sent a note about SOAP channels Sugarless Valentine's Week. She suggested we might want to advertise a Sugarless Valentine's Month! Well as you know - I don't do the advertising for BLENKO GLASS. I will send along the comment.

For me it was a sensible comment. For the entire year! Give up meat one day a week (if you haven't already given up meat) use the saving 1/2 for your piggy bank 1/2 for a Blenko or Glass Collection account, same thing with white flour and sugar, who among us really needs that white flour or sugar. Certainly NOT the children.

This year for Valentine's Day consider giving the Teachers of Your Children BLENKO GLASS hearts or red or pink BLENKO GLASS http://www.blenkoglass.com/ (not all glass is less expensive in the Blenko Glass visitors shop , Milton). Instead of giving sweets to your neighbors give GLASS red or pink BLENKO and suggest in the Spring you will bring flowers or flowers from their own garden would look so lovely in the BLENKO.

When you give BLENKO tell the Blenko story, ask for the paper products to include in the gift box (free or $1) which tell the BLENKO GLASS story. Educate your neighbors, about the marks of handmade glass, educate your children. Let's work to TAKE BACK the GLASS MAKING INDUSTRY! BLENKO GLASS is the only antique glass manufacturer in the US!

Let's work hard to keep glass making, tableware, in West Virginia.

Use BLENKO GLASS daily, along side your Fiesta (dishes from Northern WV) these companies are still in business you can get replacements if there is a breakage. Buy 2 sets, use one and let the other 'age'.

Mountain Rita tells me she has been on a diet of walking 3 miles daily before she allows herself access to the Internet, the only other thing she does is eliminate white flour. To date she has released 7 pounds since December 20th, she reports her sessions with gym trainer will begin in March after the bad weather as she must drive 40 minutes to the gym.

Way to go - Mountain Rita!

I'm rambling today, we didn't talk about Christmas Glass, did you get glass or give glass, what did you gift or receive ? (photos?), did you make New Years Resolutions? Care to share those?

Have a great day. I'm doing what I call a study 'bootcamp' I work 8 hours with 2 short breaks daily to prepare for my National Board during this my Holiday! hjh

Vacation Time? THINK BLENKO GLASS - MILTON, WV

Its a new year 2009. When scheduling your vacation time, please plan to attend the Blenko Collectors Society Gathering in Milton, West Virginia this group meets yearly in August at the Blenko Glass Factory.

If you are a new or an old collector glass, Blenko or other WV Glass this will be an exciting time for you. If you live in West Virginia - well, you MUST come down to Milton, learn about the exciting world of collecting Blenko - learn some local history, meet your neighbors, make new friends and have the opportunity to purchase glass that may never been offered for sale again.

Blenko Glass each year make many items to sell for the Collectors Gathering - its the only time these items are offered.

Your opportunity to start a collection of limited edition items at bargain prices. The souvenir sun catchers are less than $20 - so everyone can afford something during this 'vacation period'. The older workers return to 'show off' their skills, the current group of highly skilled craftsmen will be working daily, you can bring the grandchildren, children, your school class, your neighbors children, this is an expensive fun filled weekend.

While I haven't heard whats being planned this year, in years past there has been 'hot air balloon rides', the opportunity to BLOW GLASS, take glass classes from the Masters, make sun catchers, and a Vintage Glass Sale is often a part of this gathering. For more information return here - but also check out frequently the BLENKO GLASS http://www.blenkoglass.com/ website and also the Blenko Glass Collectors Society website. Questions or Comments are welcome!
Note: Thank you to Bridgett for this photo of item she is in process of acquiring.

Specht Family of Texas Vases and Decanters

HEART OF GLASS BLOG Needs your photos and stories of BLENKO & WV GLASS, please send your photos to theblenkoproject@aol.com .

The Specht Family of Texas( see part of their collection at http://www.blenkoproject.org/ )collects Blenko as a family activity. They were kind to send the following photos and note the note has a description of the glass shown. If you haven't digitally photographed your Blenko consider doing it now. Tim Alonzo at the BCS last year suggested photographing each item, labeling the photo with date purchased, amount paid and all the info you have about the item. After you photo and label - send copy to us - or if you can't label - send copy someone maybe able to help. hjh

Hillary,
Hi Hillary,You had put out the call for photos last week and I finally found the time to respond. The first is of several different "finishes" using the same mold. It is fascinating to see how the various designers adapted with color and casing to change a simple vase design. I am still trying to find out whom to attribute the second vase. It is similar to Shepherds but is not listed in the Pina Books. Maybe Tammy can confirm? The second photo was during one of my "blue " days. Enjoy and feel free to share.

Happy New Year from Heart of Glass

Phot of 1984 B LENKO GLASS www.blenkoglass.com catalogue. Happy New Year from Heart of Glass!

On this the beginning of a new year - I am repeating the 1st post from this blog:
I get emails frequently asking if I sell Blenko, if I work for Blenko Glass Co., and if I do appraisals. I did a disclaimer in the initial post.

I am NOT a Blenko employee, I am not an expert in any field I am a college student, I'll be a Doctor of Dental Surgery in May 09.

I have a great appreciation for handcrafted and made in WVa. most especially made by BLENKO GLASS Co. items. We are well into our third year of this 'blogging for glass!' I thank you - each of you for your photos, your comments, your articles, without you this blog just would not be successful. It remains one of the most successful Huntington Herald Blogs only because it is a community blog - a blog - in which the Blenko and west Virginia collectors graciously contribute. Please be proud of your blog!

9/2006 BLOG posted by Hillary J Homburg -
This blog will focus on the Blenko Glass Company located in Milton, West Virginia. Twice weekly I'll post on Blenko and WV Glass topics, once a month the post will feature an employee or designer from the present or past. Biweekly I'll post photos of individual Blenko made items, and items that are currently available from Blenko. We will offer some background information on the piece and perhaps the steps/ process used to make the item. I am NOT a fine arts major, a glass expert or an English/Journalism major. I don't have all the glass answers. I am inquisitive, don't mind asking people for answers - I believe in lifelong learning.
This blog will I hope be a place where we can learn together. If you have been to the Blenko Factory, or are a retired or former glass worker or just have photos of unusual Blenko and / or Blenko stories to share - this is the place - I'd love to see/hear them. For over three years, I have spent all my free time traveling to meet former Blenko and other glass workers and designers. I want to learn more about Blenko and W. VA. made glass. . . and I want YOU to THINK before buy glass...who made the glass. The number of glass factories in the US has declined by almost 72% in the last 15 years.Together we can stop this trend. Be an advocate for MADE IN WV.Blenko Glass Factory is located in Milton, W.Va., less than 20 minutes from Huntington, W. Va.
Ps. Thank you for reading and for your suggestions, and comments

Morris Harvey (founder of Morris Harvey College now University of Charleston). The auction is in Clendenin and I'm going for 3 reasons, there are
