Blenko Glass family mourns death of its first designer, Winslow Anderson
The Blenko Glass family is mourning the loss of renowned glass designer, Winslow Anderson.Anderson passed away Monday. He was 90.
Anderson was the first in-house designer at an American glass company when he was hired at Blenko Glass in Milton in 1946.
He stayed at Blenko until 1953 when he left to become design director at Lenox China and Crystal where he worked with glass and china.
Anderson, who designed hundreds of unique objects while at Blenko, lived in Milton after he retired from Lenox in 1980.
Anderson, who set the bar high for the long list of Blenko’s influential designers such as Wayne Husted, Hank Adams, Don Shepherd, John Nickerson and Joel Myers, was a popular fixture at the Blenko Collectors Society Conventions.
He was honored in August 1999 with a solo show, “Winslow Anderson: Artist and Designer” at the Huntington Museum of Art and that also traveled to the West Virginia Cultural Center.
An avid traveler who spent his summers on a sailboat off of Long Island in his younger days, Anderson also traveled extensively to the island of Haiti.
Traveling there once or twice a year since 1948, Anderson gathered an extensive and renowned collection of that country’s art.
The Winslow Anderson Collection of Haitian Art," featuring many of the pioneering artists such as Gabriel Alix, Montas Antoine, Alberoi and Castera Bazile, Hector Hyppolite, was exhibited at the Huntington Museum of Art in 2004.
